JMW Turner
Joseph Mallord William Turner (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851), widely known as William Turner, was a distinguished English Romantic painter, printmaker, and watercolourist. Renowned for his expressive use of colour, imaginative landscapes, and dramatic marine scenes, he developed a highly influential artistic style over the course of his career. While rooted in Romanticism, his later works moved beyond the emerging Realist movement and anticipated key elements of Impressionism and Abstract Art. Turner produced an extensive body of work, including over 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and approximately 30,000 works on paper. Supported and promoted by prominent art critic John Ruskin, he is regarded as one of the most important figures in British art history, credited with elevating landscape painting to a status comparable with history painting. He is widely considered one of the greatest painters England has ever produced.
